A prayer mat or prayer rug is simply a piece of cloth, not necessarily a pile cloth, used during prayer in Islam. In most places in the western world, a prayer mat is used as a floor mat or outdoor mat. It has been a tradition in the Muslim community to place one by the front door of the prayer house so that the guest can pray sitting down.
